What is a deep-cycle battery?

The 24v deep cycle batteries are mainly confused with car batteries but need clarification. Deep-cycle batteries are made primarily from lead. Like other batteries, it also performs the function of converting chemical energy into electrical energy. But, deep cycle batteries are much long-lasting as compared to other batteries. It can be discharged up to 80% and then rechargeable. However, experts advise recharging it when discharged up to 45 % so that the battery’s performance does not alter. This also makes a batter long-lasting. Unlike other batteries, a 24v deep cycle battery can last long and gets discharged to its utmost capacity.

Is there any notable difference between a deep cycle and a regular battery?

Yes, there is a vast difference in performance and maintenance in both batteries. Regular batteries deliver power in short bursts, whereas it is not the case in deep-cycle batteries. Standard batteries’ performance is greatly influenced when discharged up to 40 or 50%. But deep cycle batteries show consistency in their performance until it gets discharged up to 80%. Regular 24 V batteries are used in cars or for more minor needs. The primary use of deep cycle batteries is where consistent power is required for a long time. So these are used in marine applications, golf carts, and recreational vehicles. Hence, it is evident that a regular battery cannot replace a deep-cycle one.

Types of Deep Cycle Batteries:

There are two main types of deep-cycle batteries. One is a maintenance-free battery, and the other is a flooded deep-cycle battery.

  • Flooded deep cycle battery is the traditional type of deep cycle battery. It is less efficient, and it requires regular monitoring. As the electrolyte level goes down, refilling becomes mandatory for overall performance.
  • Maintenance-free batteries are called Sealed Batteries or Valve Regulated Lead Acid Batteries. As the name suggests, these batteries do not require maintenance like a flooded deep cycle battery. These batteries also do not require watering as these are sealed, but time-to-time monitoring is needed. These batteries are of the latest technology. There are two main types of sealed batteries Gel Cell and Absorbent Glass Mat Batteries.
  1. Gel cell batteries use a gel-type electrolyte. The electrolyte combines sulfuric acid, silica gel, and water, and It has an efficiency of up to 85%. Gel cell batteries require extra care for charging. Overcharging of these batteries can lead to irreparable damages. This is cheaper than a flooded and absorbent glass mat battery.
  2. Absorbent glass mat batteries (AGM) have fibreless mat plates placed between the lead plates. The glass mat performs a function of a damper inside the battery. AGM batteries can withstand extreme weather conditions, especially in winter. It is because of the glass mat’s damping action, which also moves the electrolyte. It has a charging efficiency of up to 90%.
